Drug Fm

Period:
Paleogene

Age Interval:
Early Eocene

Province:
Pakistan Indus Basin

Type Locality and Naming

Ghazij Gr – third formation in Sulaiman Province (SP). Holotype section: Drug Tangi. Author: Jamil-ud-Din, Kidwai and Sibghatullh, 1968 (unpublished field notes), and M.W.A. Iqbal, 1969. Reference section: None.

Synonym: Towards south, in the Sui gasfield Drug Formation's equivalent is gas bearing, which is called Sui Upper Limestone Fm (Siddiqui, 2004).

Lithology and Thickness

Limestone. The formation consists of limestone of pale orange to green color, weathering to white chalky. In the central Zindapir area, pale olive to green blue claystone and shale occur in the upper part, however, in Rakhi Nallah the upper part consists of yellowish grey limestone, which is medium to very coarse grained, crystalline, nodular and has marly laminated partings.

Thickness: 70-400 m. At the type section, the formation is 400 m thick, 340 m at Zindapir section and 300 m at Rakhi Nallah. Northwards in the Moghal Kot section it is most likely absent or reduced considerably in thickness. In subsurface it is correlated with Sui Upper limestone of PPL (Siddiqui, 2004), as named in the Sui gasfield where it attains a thickness of about 70 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlain by Baska Fm

Upper contact

Conformably underlain by Shaheed Ghat Fm throughout, but in Moghal Kot section underlain by Toi Fm

Regional extent

The formation is exposed only in the eastern Sulaiman Range. The formation, because of its bright reflectance between dark colored shales and linear continuity can be easily traced along Zindapir anticline. On the eastern flank of the Fort Munro anticline the formation can be traced from its southern plunge at Giandari to at least up to 31° 10' N; North of this latitude only younger thin beds of Middle-Late Eocene carbonates (Habib Rahi Fm and Pirkoh Fm) can be traced on satellite imagery.
